It was a summer night of June the thunder was roaring and lightening was brightening
the dark windy night where the shadows of branches of the trees could be seen moving and
shaking to and fro on the bedroom wall of Dariti, a beautiful maiden who was staying all
alone for her sister and mother had gone to Goa for a while to stay with her father who have been working there for many years now. Dariti, a beautiful maiden, who had features that the on lookers or passerby would not be able to resist to turn back to have another glimpse of her sight. Though her father was half Portuguese and her mother was a typical Khasi yet she inherited features of both her parents. She had straight long hair below waist length that was jet black in colour unlike her father who had rustic brown hair. Her eyes were deep brown just like her mother’s and her eye brows were long and peak shaped like and her lashes were curly as if one had used curlers to curl them. She was as tall as her father and what made her more beautiful is her bravery and courage and a kind heart that feels for everyone that she
knew.
That summer night felt a little unusual; dogs could be heard howling and it was
getting windy though not very dark even after the lights went off in the whole city because of the lightening that was flickering every now and then, yet there was something very strange about that night something that made her felt uncomfortable. As it is her habit to read down detective magazines being an officer in the CID bureau herself, that night her reading came to halt after the lights went off.
“What’s the use of staying awake now, neither will I be able to complete this
magazine nor will I be able to watch any movie now?” she said to herself, switches off her
cell phone as she slips into her cosy bed that she had already arranged before the lights went off. She folded her hands in prayer to thank God for a beautiful and successful day and also seeking his protection for all the days to come and especially for her family who were away from her. Before she could even finish her prayer in Amen her landline phone starts ringing, she ignored the ring as she was still praying. Her phone rings for a second time. This time thinking she should pick the call, she ends her prayer in Amen and when she was just about to pick the phone the lights come back and she notice the time by the clock that was hanging by the wall just opposite her bed. It was sharp 11 then, thinking who could be at that hour she picks up the call and said “hello”, hello Dariti I hope you haven’t slept as yet?” came the reply from the other side. “I’m in bed just ready to sleep, but is everything ok that you’re calling me at this time?” she asked curiously. “Oh yes Dariti everything is fine, I actually forgot to handover you the files of those cases that we have been working on as the deadline has come to submit them to the higher authorities. In my busy schedule with my client today in Guwahati, I had forgotten to handover the files to you. So would you please submit them on my behalf? They are in my locker and the key is in my table drawer.” That was the request from the other side. “Sure my dear I’ll do that for you, so haven’t you reach home yet?” asked
Dariti with so much concern. “Yea, actually I’m on my way home, the Indica cab dropped me half way and I’m taking the short cut route from where all the three of us used to walk so that I could get back home soon from this shortcut.” Replied came from the other side. “Oh dear! you should rush back home soon before the rain pours” said Dariti with care. “Yea I’m lucky it hasn’t rain as yet but I guess I should rush before it starts. So thank you so much Dari I’ll see you soon…sweet dreams”, wished from the other side. “Yes dear u too sweet dreams and take care bye”.
As both hung up the phone, Dariti went off to deep sleep until the phone rang up the
next morning. The ring of the phone wakes her up and as she rubbed her eyes to open them she noticed it was 8 o’clock by the clock on the wall. She receives the call and says “hello” after what was being converse to her she asked in shocked “What?” she gets up in a hurry from her cosy bed and dashed her knee on to the side table of her bed. She drops the phone on the floor and sits instantly on the couch by her bed side. She was trembling in fear and anxiety as she couldn’t believe what she has heard; she weeps in pain and sorrow. A few minutes later she manages to pull herself up. She freshens up get dress and move to her best friend’s home where she could see that it was already crowded with neighbors and police everywhere which made her realise that what she heard was true. She rushes inside and asked if anyone knew where Rocky was? Someone pointed into the direction where he was. She rushes in without a word and she screams and cries aloud to see Rocky’s body hanging up by the rope; she cries in deep pain. Someone grabs her by her shoulder and said, “be strong Dari” she turns back to see Lur who not only is her best friend as well but also her colleague.
She hugs him and asked, “Lur how could this happen? How could he suicide. I just can’t
believe it. It feels like a night mare to me.” She expresses her pain to him for losing Rocky
who was also their best friend where the three became friends since childhood days till the
very present times for they also are colleagues in the CID bureau. “Dari we know it’s a great loss. But you have to keep yourself calm and strong so that we can handle this matter with responsibility. Come let’s go and sit” he takes her to a nearby bench as she followed him
crying. She once again tells him that it was unbelievable for her to accept this incident. “How could he commit a suicide? He rang me last night and he sounds perfectly fine and jolly like always. Besides he never hinted us if he was going through any such problems that would have made him take this drastic step. We three have been best friends since childhood and we have always shared our happiness and sorrows with each other. So why did he left us this way without letting us know what he was going through. He is a brave man. Why would he suicide this way without leaving us a clue or the reasons behind this?” “I know Dari it is almost impossible for me too to accept such a thing. It’s just like what you said, a night mare. But this is not the time for us to break down we have to be strong and keep calm.” He makes her see reasons. Dari shook her head in agreement and suddenly she ask “where is Rose?”
Without saying a word, Lur takes her by the hand to an adjacent room. Rose sits down with
her head bend down on knees. She feels someone’s hand on her shoulder. As she raises her head up to see who it was. She sighted Dariti, her husband’s childhood friend. She hugs Dari by the waist and cries aloud, “oh Dari what evil has come to my family, I have lost my beloved husband, that too in this way. What for will I live now?” “Make yourself strong I know it hurts to lose our beloved ones.” Tears of pain roll down her cheeks saying this. In the mean while Rocky’s mother reached the scene where she was heard crying and lamenting over her son’s faith as it ended in such a way. Dariti and Lur rush to her and console her to keep herself strong and take her to the adjacent room to be with her daughter in law.
After a short while their junior officer comes to Dariti and Lur to tell them that the
body shall now be ready to be taken for the postmortem. Dariti had asked her junior officer to let the deceased mother and wife know about it. Rocky’s mother hearing it refused to give the body for postmortem saying, “isn’t it enough for my son to have died this way that now u think we should give his body to be cut and torn apart for the postmortem? He’s gone now and what is the point now for all such formalities. I have lost my son and she her husband.
That’s enough pain for us to bear. We don’t think we can go through more pain by letting his body torn and cut apart. Please go and tell your officers we are not letting such thing for our son.” The officer tried to reason with them but to no avail. So he goes to the senior police who was standing with his senior officer Dari and Lur to inform them. After hearing this the senior officer tries to reason with them as it is a police case and no one can stop them from the formalities that needs to be done in such cases and that they should cooperate with the police. The police then took over the body.
A week had passed since Rocky’s death but Dariti’s mind and soul was not yet ready
to accept such a happening. She was lost in her own self because though Rocky was her best friend besides Lur… she also was in deep love with him since her student days. She lost him once when she realised he had never loved her the way she did. For him she was just his best friend. He got married to Rose yet she still loved him in her heart but was at least happy that though she lost him he was still around her working together. Her memories of her school and college days were enough for her to survive with that one sided love she had for him. But losing him this time was unacceptable for her because this time she has lost him forever.
Dariti realised that staying depressed this way is not going to be a solution. Hence she
decided to talk to Lur and resume her office the next week. As Lur arrives at Dariti’s cabin,
he couldn’t help to stopped by her door and stared at her through the glass. Lur had a one
sided love for her but he knew Dariti had loved Rocky only since the very moment she
understood what is love. Yet he still loves her in his heart without ever letting her know about the strong feelings he felt for her. Dariti seemed to be in deep thoughts and Lur knew the reason why, as he knows the pain she felt on losing her beloved friend and also the person she had truly loved. Without knocking at the door he enters her cabin, “hey Dariti what is so deep that you have been thinking about?” He asked curiously “oh nothing much Lur.” She pretends to be okay and smile. “Come on Dariti, stop lying to yourself and me. Your fake smile is not going to glow your gloomy face” said Lur as though he could read her mind.
“Yes Lur you are right I have been struggling with my own self not ready to accept that
Rocky is now gone and that too that way. I mean how could he just suicide? Though of
course the postmortem reports do show it’s a suicide case. Yet my heart is not ready to
accept it. I don’t know why but I have a strong feeling that there is something behind all this that we are unable to see right now”, she told him with so much doubt to all that was
happening.
Lur nods in agreement and tells her he feels the same way and asked if she had doubt
on anyone who may have been behind the scene. Dariti expresses her doubt, “I don’t know
Lur, but Rose his wife doesn’t seem like a clear figure to me. I mean usually a wife at such
cases would be sitting to her husband’s corpse but she didn’t she was on another room where even her well wishers who had come to give their condolences had to search for her as she was nowhere to be found near her husband’s dead body. I mean what makes it more strange is she did not agreed for the post-mortem and according to the police statement that had been given to them she was staying at her parents because her father had fallen ill when all that incident happened and I am told that in the morning when she had returned to her husband’s place she found him hung himself to death, all this sounds fishy to me. I want to get into the core of this matter and find out what is the real thing behind all this. For that I need you Lur to help me solve this mystery, will you? “Of course, I will Dariti even I want to solve the mystery behind all this and don’t you worry we will work hand in hand together for this till we succeed to find out the truth.” Lur said to Dariti giving her the assurance that no matter
what would happen, he would stand by her at all odds and evens and suddenly, gets up from his seat to leave when suddenly he stops realizing that he came to her room for some work.
“Oh Dariti! see I am so absent minded, I actually came to tell you that in the board meeting yesterday, the board has decided that from now on you will be handling all the cases of Rocky and you will be getting an official letter for that. So you better start going through all his cases because most of them are supposed to be submitted by this week itself.” “Okay Lur, “she replied saying this Dariti suddenly remembers that she had a phone call from Rocky the night before he died regarding one such case. Lur leaves for his cabin. After sometime Dariti, goes to Rocky’s cabin gets the key of the locker from the table drawer as had been told by Rocky that night. She takes out a few files and went back to her cabin. She sits down and goes through those file. As she flip pages after pages suddenly she saw a legal paper which seem like a will she looked at it and thought, “how could Rocky be careless to keep a will paper between the pages of these files knowing that these files travel from one place to another” without reading or noticing much she takes out the will and keep it inside her drawer and continues to go through those cases.
On the other hand Lur in his cabin was worried about Dariti who seem helpless and depressed since the very day their beloved friend died. Hence he thought out a plan to visit Rose parents that evening just to make sure if it was true that she was with her parents the night before her husband, Rocky died. So after office hours, he went to visit Rose parents. As he met them he told them he heard about Rose’s father’s illness and because he happened to have some work nearby so he visited them as well. Rose’s parents were happy to welcome him. As they sat and started talking about this and that, Lur found this as a good opportunity to ask them about their daughter’s visit. As he asked them he came to know that she did visited her parents but she didn’t stay back that night in fact she had gone somewhere for some work. Hearing this Lur realised that Dariti was not wrong in suspecting Rose with regards to Rocky’s death.
The search for truth then was started by both Lur and Dariti to find out the truth
behind Rocky’s death which now seemed like a murder and not a suicide as had been
portrayed before. Both Lur and Dariti collected as many proofs against their main suspect
Rose. After having enough proofs Dariti waited patiently for the right time to arrest the
culprit behind the death of her beloved friend which was now sure to be a case of murder.
Finally Dariti approaches to Rose at her home to arrest her, but she denied of having
anything to do with her husband’s death. Dariti showed her an earring that had fallen
accidentally at the murder site and which was the same shortcut lane that Rocky had passed from that night after being dropped by the public cab, Indica. She showed her the lighter that was owned by Rocky that was found nearby the grasses in the same place where it had Rocky’s initials on it and the same was gifted to him by their friend Lur on his last birthday.
She then showed her the will papers that she had inserted between pages of Rocky’s file
which had already been studied by Rocky that only needs to be signed. Rocky must have
signed without flipping the pages totally rather flip the pages only from the bottom as he
signed them at the bottom of the pages proved that he didn’t notice. The same will says that Rocky had named all his movable and immovable properties to his wife.
Realising that there was no way out now to escape. Rose reaches to a nearby drawer
to take out her unlicensed gun. She points the gun at Dariti saying, “since now you have
known the truth then what is the point to keep away secrets from you. Yes I killed my
husband because I never loved him but married him for his property that he had inherited
from his father all the land, the coal mines, the houses and all his assets. He was a fool that he felt into my trap of fake love, I won his confidence and now I’ll have his entire share. Now give me those papers right away.” Dariti couldn’t believe what she heard, she thought how one could be so heartless to take away the soul of an innocent one for one’s own personal motives. Dariti tried to reason with her to surrender herself to the law and not to take the law in her own hands but Rose stood adamant and ignored her. As she tried to snatch away the will, Dariti fought back in resistance so that those important papers could not reached her hand. In the process of their fight Dariti got hold of her gun and points out to her saying,
“Hands up, your game is over.” Saying this a gunshot was heard from behind where the bullet hit pass through Dariti’s arm and she fell on the floor with a thud… As she turned back to see who had shot her, she was amazed to see it was no one else but Rocky’s mother. She asked in surprise “you?” with a sarcastic smile on her face she said, “Yes, my dear. I know you must be wondering what is happening here and from where did I reached but you know what, it was me who got Rocky murdered, he was my step son, his father had named all the will to his name without leaving anything for me. I wanted those properties. I know if I had asked for it, he would have given me happily, but I didn’t want to seem bad and greedy in front him, he loved me and I didn’t want to lose his trust. Hence I etched a plan after I met Rose in a party one night; we both had a 50-50 agreement on the share. I introduced her to him and with her charm, Rose succeeded to make him her prey, I got them married off early before he even had second thoughts and that night with the help of two more men that we hired, we finally killed him. Hung his body so that it seemed he had committed suicide. Made fake postmortem reports and the only thing that was left was to get those papers from you which will
finally gave us what we wanted. But for that you will have to die for if I can kill my so called son, I can also kill you… so good bye darling.” As she was about to pull the trigger, someone shoots her hand from behind and she got stunned when she saw Lur and the police team had surrounded them. They were caught and sentenced lifetime imprisonment.
Lur and Dari achieved victory for the soul of their beloved friend and finally the truth
comes to core. Hence, “justice gains victory”.
